Hottest 100 Of All Time 2009

Its been quite interesting following twitter the last few days... The Hottest 100 of All Time was played over the last week, and it wasnt until about Thursday and Friday that people started commenting that there was no female artists placing in the Hottest 100 (#Hottest100 tag on Twitter). I actually got flamed when I mentioned something like this on Thursday.... Only two tracks had female vocalists featured - both Massive Attack tracks (Teardrop and Unfinished Sympathy) had guest female vocalists. There were five bands that had a female member, but they werent prominent. I kept waiting for Bjork, PJ Harvey Portishead, or even Kate Bush, Suzie Q, Missy Higgins, Tori Amos etc... I was SURE there would be atleast one Bjork song.... I kept waiting and waiting, and was quite disappointed. I cant complain too much. I voted for Tori Amos's Winter - one of my ten songs... I just assumed people would vote for Bjork, and I could never choose just one song for Bjork, Ani Difranco etc... I went back through my own list, and only 1/4 were female artists or had female members.

  • All I Want – Sarah Blaskco
  • Building A Mystery – Sarah MacLachlan
  • Candy – Iggy Pop & Kate Pierson
  • Coat of Many Colours – Dolly Parton
  • Cruicfy – Tori Amos
  • Daniel – Bat For Lashes
  • Devil Gate Drive – Suzi Quatro
  • Icarus – Ani DiFranco
  • Jóga – Björk
  • Knuckle Down – Ani DiFranco
  • Little Earthquakes – Tori Amos
  • Love Shack – The B-52s
  • Manhole – Ani DiFranco
  • Maps – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  • Pagan Poetry – Björk
  • Precious things – Tori Amos
  • Rock lobster – The B-52s
  • Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
  • Silence – Delerium ft Sarah McLachlan
  • Silent all These years – Tori Amos
  • Slide – Ani DiFranco
  • Today – Smashing Pumpkins
  • Untouchable Face – Ani DiFranco
  • Winter – Tori Amos (My #2)
  • Wuthering Heights – Kate Bush
  • Zero – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  • Zombie – The Cranberries

^There might be others where I dont know there is a female band member.. I know with the above, that these mostly have main vocals by chicks, except for Smashing Pumpkins who have had a female bass player. If you have seen my list, and I have missed any, can you let me know? I had a lot of issues with what to choose to vote for... I ended up voting not for fav songs so much as longs I like which are "worthy" - as in the songs were musically of value, as well as something I liked... So I was grading for lyrics, meaning, arrangement etc as well as because I loved it... I think if I revised my list I would be taking out Lightning Crashes, White Wedding, and War Pigs and put in Ani Difranco and Bjork - maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs... But I couldnt decided which Ani or Bjork song to choose... I heard one person discussing how it was hard, because with bands like Led Zepplin etc they have just one iconic song that people associate with them... where as with say Bjork or Ani, how would you choose just one song.... I know I had to give myself a limit on how many of hers I put in this list for them, as they just had too many good ones... Its really interesting the discussions that are being raised on this... The fact that some are raising it as a feminist issue or gender debate, changing trends in music, age groups and gender of voters etc... I am of two minds... Yes, I think it is disconcerting that there were no female acts, but at the same time, I know I personally had issues choosing what to vote for, and of my top ten I only voted for one female artist (go tori go!). And I didnt think of the gender of the musicians, but of the songs themselves. Anyway, I think it is an important debate, but at the same time, its not something I would start protesting about...

Aside from that, I LOVED the Hottest 100!!! I think there was just 5-10 songs I either didnt like, or wasnt moved by (Blink 182? are you kidding me? Not fussed by Bittersweet Symphony either..) My Highlights:
